What an unlinked brand mention means
The term describes a brand naming that carries no link, something that existed before generative AI (a magazine citing a product without linking it, an article naming a company in passing), but that has gained new weight with conversational AI systems. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini answer a question and name a brand inside the answer, they almost never insert a clickable link following the same criteria a classic SEO writer would apply: sometimes they cite the source at the bottom, sometimes they cite nothing at all. The brand ends up mentioned, visible to whoever reads the answer, but without the trail a traditional search engine would use to attribute authority. It is not the same as a linked citation, nor the same as a backlink: it is a third state, textual presence without a technical connection. The practice of measuring how much and how a brand appears in these answers, with or without a link, is what the industry calls AI visibility, and the unlinked mention is one of its components, alongside position within the answer and the sentiment it is mentioned with. It is not a term Google officially defines; it is practice vocabulary from the AI visibility field, grounded in the entity concept Google does document.
