What makes organic CTR different

General CTR is calculated the same way in every channel: clicks divided by impressions, times one hundred. Organic CTR applies that same formula to a specific territory, the unpaid results of organic search, and that's where something kicks in that doesn't exist in a paid ad: the position isn't bought, and everything that shows up around a result on that same page competes for the same click without anyone having paid for that space.

That difference matters because organic CTR depends on three things at once, not just the title and meta description that technical SEO works on: it depends on position, still the heaviest factor; on query intent, since a branded search behaves very differently from a generic one; and on whatever else occupies the results page next to the blue link, which in 2026 carries more weight than it did five years ago because Google keeps adding blocks (featured snippets, People Also Ask, map packs, AI Overviews) that siphon off clicks without moving anyone's ranking. That's why the same "position 1" can mean very different things in practice, and any analysis that ignores this is comparing numbers that aren't actually comparable.

Paid CTR tends to run higher than organic on queries with clear purchase intent, because the ad appears first and the person clicking has already decided to act. Organic CTR, by contrast, competes for attention with everything Google chooses to show for free on that same page: there's no way to pay to raise that number, only to work the snippet and hold the position no matter what shows up around it.

How organic CTR breaks down by position

The most widely cited data on CTR by position comes from a Backlinko study built on Semrush data, covering 1,312,881 pages and 12,166,560 queries analyzed, updated on April 16, 2025 (verified, accessed August 8, 2026):

The drop between position 1 and position 2 is the steepest in the whole table, close to 12.5 percentage points, and past position 5 the curve flattens out. This is an aggregate average across millions of queries of every kind, not a fixed number for your page: a branded query at position 3 can beat position 1's average CTR without breaking a sweat, and a highly competitive generic query at position 1 can land well under 27.6% if it shares the page with ads, a map pack, or a questions block.

How SERP features and AI Overviews change organic CTR

Here's the part almost no "position 1 = X%" benchmark accounts for: CTR at the same position shifts depending on what other elements sit on the page next to the result, and that effect has been documented for years. A 2017 Ahrefs study, covering roughly 100,000 keywords, found that position 1 without a featured snippet above it captured around 26% of clicks, versus 19.6% when a featured snippet occupied the top block; the snippet itself kept around 8.6%. That's a 2017 figure, dated, and we flag it as such, but the direction of the effect (an element above the top result pulls clicks away even when its position doesn't change) still gets cited because we couldn't verify a more recent repeat of that measurement at comparable scale in a primary source.

With AI Overviews, the effect is more recent and better measured. Seer Interactive has run an ongoing tracking study since 2024, using Search Console, Google Ads, and proprietary tool data. Its April 2026 update, with data through February of that year across 53 brands, 5.47 million queries, and 2.43 billion organic impressions, measured organic CTR at 3.82% for queries without an AI Overview versus 2.36% when the AI Overview appears on the same page, a relative drop of around 38% (verified, accessed August 8, 2026). An earlier reading from the same series, with a much smaller sample (42 organizations and 25.1 million impressions, June 2024 through September 2025), had recorded a 61% decline, the figure that circulates most in SEO articles on this topic. Seer Interactive itself documents that the impact has since eased: exactly why a single stray figure like "AI Overview cuts CTR by X%," without a date or sample size, deserves caution rather than repetition.

The same April 2026 study confirms the featured-snippet logic with one nuance: appearing on a page with an AI Overview isn't the same as being cited inside it. Being cited delivers 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, on pages where the AI Overview already appears (verified). The effect also varies by query type: "X vs Y" comparison queries show an AI Overview 95.4% of the time, with classic CTR heavily compressed; direct questions show one 85.9% of the time, and CTR without a citation drops to 0.94%; general informational queries, with an AI Overview only 36% of the time, hold a CTR of 2.07% when cited; and transactional queries, where the AI Overview appears in just 5% of searches, range between 0.62% and 1.65% (verified figures, Seer Interactive, April 2026).

People Also Ask and the local map pack follow a similar pattern: they take up space exactly where blue links used to be. We couldn't find a study with a concrete, primary-source-verifiable figure for exactly how much each one shaves off position 1's CTR, so we're flagging that as an observed effect, not a confirmed percentage, rather than inventing a number just to fill the gap. The practical takeaway: a "position 1 = 27.6%" benchmark that doesn't say which SERP features share that query isn't useful for judging whether your page is doing well or badly. Always compare Search Console's real CTR against the average for that same position on similar queries with the same features on screen, not against a generic table.

Best practices

  • Check in Search Console whether the queries losing CTR show an AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a People Also Ask box before blaming the title: the problem might not be your snippet, but what Google added above it.
  • Work on the title tag and meta description so they directly address the query's intent, making the visible snippet convincing even when it competes with other page elements.
  • Chase the citation inside the AI Overview, not just a top-10 position: per Seer Interactive, being cited multiplies clicks per impression compared with not being cited when the AI Overview already appears for that query.
  • Segment your CTR analysis by query type (informational, transactional, branded): the effect of AI Overviews and other SERP features isn't uniform, so a low CTR on direct questions doesn't predict what happens on transactional queries.
  • Re-measure the CTR of your key pages every few months: both how often AI Overviews show up and their effect on CTR shift over time, as shown by the gap between the 2025 and 2026 readings of the same Seer Interactive study.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating a "position 1 = X%" benchmark without checking whether that query shares the page with a featured snippet, a map pack, or an AI Overview: the generic figure doesn't reflect the CTR actually expected in that context.
  • Citing the 61% AI Overview CTR decline as the current figure, when it comes from a smaller sample and an earlier period than the 2026 reading, which shows a smaller drop.
  • Confusing "appearing on a page with an AI Overview" with "being cited in it": those are situations with very different CTR, and the second is the one that actually matters.
  • Treating organic and paid CTR as interchangeable when setting targets, when paid CTR doesn't compete with free SERP features the same way.
  • Drawing conclusions from a single query or a small click sample in Search Console: percentages at low positions with few impressions are statistically shaky from one day to the next.

How does organic CTR differ from Google Ads CTR?

The formula is the same, clicks divided by impressions, but organic CTR belongs to a position that isn't for sale and competes with everything Google adds for free on the page (featured snippets, AI Overviews, map packs). Why does my organic CTR vary so much between queries at the same position?

Because position isn't the only thing that determines CTR. A branded query at position 5 can post a higher CTR than a generic query at position 1, and a position 1 with a featured snippet or an AI Overview above it gets fewer clicks than a "clean" position 1 without those elements.
