What is social media marketing?
Social media marketing is the use of social platforms, organically and/or through paid advertising, to build a brand, reach its target audience, drive traffic to a website, and maintain a relationship with existing customers. It doesn't work in isolation: it often shares resources with email marketing, blog content, and SEO. The approach spans everything from day-to-day community management to individual ad campaigns, depending on which goal takes priority for the brand at a given moment.
Several pieces work together inside the discipline. Content creation and planning decide what gets published and when, usually against an editorial calendar built around a buyer persona. Community management answers comments, messages, and mentions, the most manual part of the daily work. Paid advertising reaches specific segments when organic reach isn't enough, and collaborations with creators add an outside voice to a brand's own content. Measuring results closes the loop: without data, there's no way to know which content actually works.
